Kakadjo, Maine
What's better than a first hand account of vacation locations?
July, 2004 - Kakadjo Camps, Moosehead Lake Region, Frenchtown, ME
This vacation has become a yearly event for my family. Never have we experienced a vacation that can truely relax one's mind, body and spirit, well at least the mind and spirit.
Kakajo Camps is located on First Roach Pond in the town of Frenchtown, ME. It offers year round escapes; the warmer months offer spendid fishing, whether it be the river or pond, and the winter months it becomes a popular snow mobile stop-over.
Kakajo Camps offers great accomodations with the recent addition of 4 new log cabin units. These units all come equiped with gas range, electric appliances and each bathroom has a jacuzzi tub! You're not roughing it when you stay in these cabins.
Dock facilities are available for those who wish to bring their boat. Gas fill ups are available on site. Or, if you would rather, rent a fishing boat from the camp. First Roach pond and river are known for brook trout and freshwater salmon. Roach river is fly fishing only with catch and release restrictions.
Another great feature of Kakajo Camps is thier restaurant and general store. You don't have to cook a meal if you don't want to, Marie's cooking is well known in this area. Everyone should treat themselves to at least one meal from the restaurant.
The general store stocks a good supply of food items and of course fishing gear. Maine fishing licenses can also be obtained at the camp store.
If you time your vacation, as we do, for either the last week of July or the first week of August you can spend some time picking fresh raspberries or real wild Maine blueberries. This outing has become a yearly standard for us. Once picked I return to our cabin to prepare a fresh pie for desert, some are saved to make blueberry pancakes for breakfast, and the bulk are used to make jams that we enjoy all year.
Nearby Kakajo Camps is Greenville, ME located at the southern tip of Moosehead Lake. Here you can arrange for boat tours of Moosehead Lake, stock up on perishables at one of two grocery stores, and shop for local souveniers.
Heading north you can take a day trip to Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin, the northern termenis for the Appleachain Trail. This trip takes about two hours from camp.
Last, but not least, let's not forget the wildlife. Moose sightings are very common around this region. Not far from camp is a beaver bog. Time your visit to see these magnificent animals as they go about their daily life.
For more information about Kakajo Camps and the Moosehead Lake region request "I want more information" from above. I'll be happy to answer any of your questions.
